Director's Note
Hedda Gabler is a play about how the patriarchy kills women. Hedda Gabler is a figure of enormous proportion, whose mystery has eluded many. Ibsen’s plays consistently shocked his audiences, from Nora’s exit in A Doll House, to the incest of Ghosts and Solness’ death in The Master Builder.
When Ibsen wrote Hedda Gabler, the shock was different, a total rejection of the troubled inner life of a character. Understanding this from an internal, human experience has been provocative, murky, and insightful. I would like to make special mention of Kyle Goeken and Elsa Pahl, both of whom are illuminative, thoughtful collaborators whose work has made this project possible.
