Director's Note
Nick Payne's play asks us to consider the ephemeral nature of human connection. In a play with 52 scenes, it is only in chance encounters that Roland and Marianne's lives cross, and even then, most of their interactions go nowhere.
Like two electrons flying around, these two characters bounce off each other and attempt to resolve themselves. The metaphors at work within this play are myriad, many of which were hard to contextualise or employ early on. They mull on our proximity to each other physically and emotionally, and the self-contained lives we catch glimpses of in fleeting moments.
Directing this play was a curious, intimate process that revealed itself in unexpected ways.
